This year, we will present a debut of a new work by Ars Electronica Solutions for “Animal, Vegetable, Mineral”.

A single thought triggers a veritable fireworks of electrical signals in the brain. This is how nerve cells (neurons) communicate with each other. There’s an especially large number of neurons in the cerebral cortex, the brain’s outermost layer featuring numerous grooves and folds. The EEG (Electroencephalography) “eavesdrops on” the neurons’ conversations. A high-performance computer is able to recognize patterns in the signals and to classify them as having to do with particular brain functions.
The participants in the experiment will be connected to the electrodes that record the activity of these cells and a computer will listen to the participant's neurons' conversation, with images from different categories: animal, vegetable, mineral, as well as images which challenge the separations between these classic categories. The computer will analyze the electric storm that each image and category evokes and will teach us about festival visitors. The work explores, among other things, where in the brain we respond to categories and how precisely natural and understandable are they to us?

כל מחשבה שעולה בנו מעוררת במח זיקוקים של אותות חשמליים. זהו האופן בו תאי העצב מתקשרים זה עם זה. המשתתפים בניסוי יחוברו לאלקטרודות הרושמות את הפעילות של תאים אלה ומחשב יאזין לשיחה של תאי העצב של המשתתף, כשאל מולו יוצגו תמונות מקטגוריות שונות: חי, צומח, דומם, וכן דימויים שמאתגרים את ההפרדות בין הקטגוריות הקלסיות האלו. המחשב ינתח את הסערה החשמלית שכל דימוי וקטגוריה מעוררים במשתתפים ויוכל ללמד אותנו על באי הפסטיבל. העבודה בוחנת, בין היתר, איפה במוח אנו מגיבים לקטגוריות ועד כמה בדיוק טבעיות ומובנות הן לנו?
