This workshop explores the world of computer vision, image datasets, and facial recognition. Beginning with the smallest unit of visual information, one pixel, we will navigate the emerging world of optical machines. Participants will learn how computer vision algorithms work, where training datasets originate, and how your social media posts have played a large role in building face recognition. The workshop will discuss prior work and research from the megapixels.cc and cvdazzle.com projects and discuss artistic strategies for adapting to, critiquing, and living in a world of total surveillance.

Inspired by their acclaimed production User Not Found, the UK's Dante Or Die Theatre is leading a creative devising workshop on digital identities. This is a three-hour session that explores how people feel about their digital legacies and how we tell stories in the digital age. The workshop will investigate how social media and technology can be used to create theatrical events and generate narratives. The workshop will be in Hebrew and led by Dante Or Die’s co-Artistic Director Daphna Attias. It is open to creatives from all art forms.

A tribute hackathon to Adam Harvey
Batt-Girl Yoav Lifshitz

A tribute hackathon to one of the guest artists in Print Screen, 2019 - Adam Harvey. In the past decade, Harvey has been working on the border between art, fashion, design, and hacking, exploring the relationship between these fields, and focusing on current issues in politics and technology. Before the official opening of the festival, a team of artists, programmers, designers, and makers will come together for a two-day hackathon, to develop new projects inspired by two of Harvey’s best-known works: CV Dazzle - a hair and make-up design project set to camouflage from face detection algorithms, and - Stealth Wear a set of garments designed to camouflage from Drone surveillance.

Stranger Identities

How much can you learn about a stranger from a stray cigarette butt?

Our DNA can reveal stories about us—including our ancestry, disease risks, physical characteristics, and predispositions.  Today, millions of people have explored their DNA to uncover these stories using direct-to-consumer sequencing services. In the process, new questions about ancestry and the predictive power of the genome have arisen.  What does (and doesn't) your DNA reveal? How are emerging genetic technologies reinforcing age-old stereotypes and what can we do to subvert them? The participants in this workshop will be taken through the creative stages behind the artist’s work in projects such as:

Stranger Visions
Probably Chelsea

and T3511

Together we will generate and share speculative profiles from the genetic data of strangers we find online. The workshop will conclude with an introduction to the artist's latest research on facial recognition technology, reversing the algorithmic gaze and generating images that are recognized as her face, although they look nothing like her, or like any human face.   No prior technical experience necessary.
