In collaboration with Asylum Arts

In the last few years, scholars have been contemplating the end of humanism and the start of something different, a post human age where humans are no longer the center of the universe. Scanning this year’s news may provide us with a few proofs to that claim: scientists have discovered that the biome inside our body may determine our mental health and personality. In Europe, they are currently considering granting robots rights which were traditionally limited to humans. AI has been implemented into many home devices, rendering them intelligent and communicative. Animal rights movements are flooding the streets, calling for the extension of animal rights and the cessation of animal servitude.

This exhibition examines our intricate and evolving relationship with the nonhuman. In a series of installations and performances the artists observe, learn, interact, collaborate, control, and embody the microscopic, the animalistic, and the computerized. These processes highlight both similarities and differences between our nonhuman partners and us, but along the way, they also raise primal fears regarding the possibility that these minds may exceed ours.

בשנים האחרונות, חוקרים מציינים את קץ ההומניזם ואת תחילתו של עידן אחר, פוסט-אנושי שבו בני האדם אינם עוד במרכז ההוויה. התבוננות בחדשות מהשנה האחרונה עשויה לספק לנו כמה הוכחות לטענה זו: מדענים גילו כי החיידקים שבגופנו קובעים לא רק את מצבנו הבריאותי אלא גם את מצבי הרוח והאישיות, באירופה שוקלים לתת לראשונה לרובוטים זכויות כאדם, האינטליגנציה המלאכותית מתוכנתת למכשירים ביתיים והופכת אותם לחכמים "ותקשורתיים", ותנועות חברתיות רבות קוראות להרחבת זכויות בעלי החיים ולהפסקת שיעבודם בידי האדם.

תערוכה זו בוחנת את היחסים המורכבים והמתפתחים שלנו עם הלא אנושי. בסדרה של מיצבים ומיצגים, האמנים בתערוכה מתבוננים, לומדים, פועלים, משתפים פעולה, שולטים ומגלמים את המיקרוסקופי, החייתי והממוחשב. תהליכים אלה מדגישים הן את קווי הדמיון והן את ההבדלים בינינו לבין השותפים הלא אנושיים שלנו, ולאורך הדרך, מעלים פחדים קיומיים מכך שמוחות זרים אלו עשויים למעשה להתעלות על שלנו במובנים רבים.

Evolution of a departure

“Evolution of a departure” is about the fading of life, weakness, and the transformation of us as bodies of nature. It is an ephemeral installation of machines that construct ruins and random biotic patterns through electronic and biological devices that replace the natural time through the development of fungal and bacterial activity. This is carried out through a decaying fruit that sends digital data to an organic matrix. This matrix then receives this information and changes its environmental conditions to enable the emergence of micro worlds through sensors and actuators that control and speed up the natural process of disintegration.

העבודה של קנטרה עוסקת בדעיכת החיים, בחולשה ובשינויים שעוברים על גופים בטבע לאורך זמן. זהו מיצב בן-חלוף של מכונות המחקות את המנגנונים הביוטיים, את הפעילות החיידקית והפטרייתית המלווה כל מוות של יצור אורגני. הפרי הנרקב במרכז העבודה משמש כקלט לסנסורים הדוגמים את מצבו הביולוגי, בכל פעימת מידע, הם מייצאים תמונה למעין מטריצה אורגנית המהווה ייצוג ויזואלי של ריקבון לאורך הזמן. המידע הנקלט על-ידי המחשב משמש גם לשינוי התנאים הסביבתיים בחלל, לשינוי בסביבה המיקרוביולוגית ולהאצה של התהליך "הטבעי" של פירוק החומר.

The project is a prototypical new program that combines the activity of a computer virus and biological viruses. Sequences of viruses are introduced combinatorially: they gradually transform, destroy, and substitute the initial sequence to create entirely new configurations of signs and natural objects. The test program shows how my DNA [collected from my saliva] is combined with codes of the viruses [Lloviu virus, Polio virus, Marburg virus, etc.]. The project shows how logical structures and computer processes remain related to biological and chemical processes.

וירוסים ביולוגיים ווירוסי מחשבים משולבים בקוד גנטי. העבודה מציגה את השינוי ההדרגתי שבו המבנה של הקוד נהרס, ונוצר מקטע חליפי שהולך ומתפתח, עד להיווצרותה של קונפיגורציה חדשה לגמרי שמורכבת מסימנים ומאובייקטים ביולוגיים. התוכנה לדוגמא שיציג ליזק משתמשת ב DNA שלו בשילוב וירוסים כמו פוליו, מרבורג ווירוסים הגורמים למחלות בעטלפים. העבודה ממחישה איך מבנים לוגיים וממוחשבים דומים במהותם לאלו הביולוגיים והכימיים.

Shachar Freddy Kislev

In the center of many of Kislev’s works stands a figure that challenges traditional categories of Animal, Vegetable, and Mineral. The video in this exhibition is the same. It depicts an unidentified organism who arouses our wonder while it undergoes a gradual process of self-formation, from a single cell to a fully articulated snack.

It was made possible with the support of the Ostrovsky family fund and the New Fund for Cinema and Television.

Can time be reversed? Is it possible to influence aging through the human voice?

In his genetic laboratory, Prof. Eran Meshorer at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem has recently succeeded in reprogramming a 72-year-old genome and "rejuvenating" the cells to resemble a six-day fetus. Nivi Elroy, an artist, and Eyal Fried and Itai Laniado, designers, joined forces with Prof. Meshorer to create a sculptural table that examines the effect of the human voice on the development, aging, and youthfulness of human cells. The viewer is invited to make a sound, and the table will respond to the human voice and create a sensory, visual and auditory dialogue through which the visitor influences the simulation of cell life.

האם ניתן להחזיר את הזמן לאחור? האם אפשר להשפיע על תהליכי הזדקנות באמצעות הקול האנושי?

במעבדתו הגנטיקאי פרופ׳ ערן משורר באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים הצליחו לאחרונה לתכנת מחדש גנום בן 72 שנים, ו״להצעיר״ את התאים - להחזיר את התאים למצב של עובר בן שישה ימים. המהלך המסעיר הוביל אותנו ליצור יחד אובייקט אינטראקטיבי המושפע ממחקר תאי גזע, ומשחק בזמן.

ניבי אלרואי, אמנית, ואייל פריד ואיתי לניאדו, מעצבים, יאחדו כוחות עם פרופ׳ משורר לקראת פסטיבל פרינטסקרין וייצרו שולחן פיסולי הבוחן את השפעת הקול האנושי על התפתחות, הזדקנות ונעורים של תאים אנושיים. הצופה יוזמן לשבת אל השולחן להשמיע קול. אנימציה וחומר הטמונים בשולחן יגיבו אל הקול האנושי ויצרו דיאלוג, חוויה חושית, ויזואלית וקולית דרכה משפיע המבקר על סימולציה של חיי התא.

האובייקט יתייחס למסורת של חדרי פלאות, מעדות על שולחן העבודה של של ג׳ון גרדון, אבי השיבוט, ועד מחשבות על מרחב עבודה עתידי של חוקרים הרוקמים מחדש תאי גזע כל יכולים.

The Grid Project

The Grid project is an ongoing research project that aims to discover and reveal the visually complex aspects of the tension created between computer generated patterns and the reaction of a living organism to it. This live organism is a super species called Physarum polycephalum.

This experiment will include two generative mechanisms in use for creating the results and designs. The organism’s nutrients will be placed in the shape of randomly computer generated patterns created by code. Then, this new layered data system would be incubated to encourage the growth of the organism, and result in a reaction in shape of a conversation between the two.

פרויקט הגריד הוא מחקר מתמשך, שמטרתו לגלות ולחשוף את המורכבות החזותית שבמתח בין תבניות ממוחשבות לתגובה של אורגניזם חי אליו. האורגניזם בעבודה זו הוא זן-על שנקרא Physarum polycephalum או Slime Mold (פטריית עובש). במהלך העבודה, חומרי הזנה של האורגניזם, ימוקמו בצורה של דפוסים אקראיים ממוחשבים שנוצרו על ידי קוד. לאחר מכן, תתבצע הדגרה של האורגניזם אשר לאורך זמן יחל לשלוח גרורות לאורך המרחב. השיחה בין האורגניזם לתבנית בו הושם, צפויה להוליד צורות גרפיות חדשות ולא צפויות.

Objectivity [tentative]

Nurit Bar Shai

Taking inspiration from the work and research of Prof. Eshel Ben Jacob “The Social Life of Bacteria, Nurit Bar-Shai’s ”Objectivity [tentative] is a series of experiments and interventions with “smart” microorganism, drawing a link between microbial morphogenesis and designed ecosystems, between structure and behavior. Bar-Shai synthesizes traditional lab techniques and artistic inquiries to visualize the “chemical tweets” of microbial complex social behavior and decision-making. In the Soundscapes series, part of the Objectivity [tentative] body of work, sound waves and a range of frequencies are used as a variable replacing scientific control settings to initiate growth of complex compositional structures among bacteria colonies. Audio waves are transmitted through liquid agar as it solidifies, forming sound-generated topographies for bacterium growth. Each outcome results in a unique generative patterns and is directly conditioned to the initial settings introduced by the artist, a visual representation for microbial communication systems.

בהשראת עבודתו ומחקריו של פרופ 'אשל בן יעקב "החיים החברתיים של החיידקים", נוצרה סדרת עבודות זו של נורית בר-שי. זו היא סדרה של ניסויים והתערבויות עם מיקרואורגניזם "חכם", הקושרת בין מבנה והתנהגות. בר-שי מסנתזת טכניקות מעבדה מסורתיות לצד מחקר אמנותי כדי לדמיין את ה"טוויטים הכימיים" של התנהגות חברתית וקבלת החלטות בעולם החיידקי. בסדרת Soundscapes המהווה חלק מגוף העבודות אובייקטיביות [טנטטיבי] - גלי קול ומגוון תדרים משמשים כמשתנה המחליף את הגדרות הבקרה המדעית ומשפיע על צמיחת קומפוזיציות מורכבות במושבות חיידקים. גלי אודיו מועברים דרך אגר נוזלי לאורך תהליך התקשותו, והתוצאה היא טופוגרפיות קוליות לצמיחת חיידקים. כל תוצאה גורמת לדפוסים גנראטיביים ייחודיים המושפעים מההגדרות הראשוניות של האמן ומהווים ייצוג חזותי למערכות תקשורת חיידקית.

בתערוכה מוצגות מגוון צלחות מסדרת Soundscapes המהווה חלק מגוף העבודות.

The Metamorphosis 360

A sweet 360-degree rendition of the classic work by Franz Kafka - "The Metamorphosis," in which a bachelor who lives in his parents' home awakens one morning to find out he had become a cockroach. The film offers a contemporary reading of Kafka's work, where the son does not support the family, but rather returns to his parents' home out of personal distress. The various tensions presented by the book - between idleness and work, father and son, human and nonhuman - translates into the current era and show the modern mind as one that oscillates between claustrophobia and freedom. The usage of 360 video raises further questions about the increasingly blurred line between virtual and real.

This short film was created with the support of the "Steamer Salon VR LAB," "Tel Aviv university's film school" and "The Jerusalem Film Fund."

עיבוד מריר מתוק של 360 מעלות ליצירה הקלאסית של פרנץ קפקא - ״הגלגול״, בו רווק שגר בבית הוריו מתעורר בוקר אחד ומגלה שהפך לג׳וק. הסרט מציע קריאה עכשווית ליצירתו של קפקא, כשהבן אינו זה שמפרנס את המשפחה, אלא חוזר לבית הוריו מתוך מצוקה אישית. המתחים השונים שהציג הספר - בין בטלה לעבודה, אב לבן, אנושי וחייתי- מתרגמים לעידן הנוכחי ומציגים את הנפש המודרנית ככזו המטלטלת בין קלסטרופוביה לחופש. השימוש בטכנולוגיית ה360 תורמת להעלאת שאלות לגבי הגבול ההולך ומטשטש בין הוירטואלי לממשי.

Dance with flARmingos: Multispecies Dance

A Mixed Reality experience that features a dance between humans and virtual flamingos, and pays homage to the flamingo—a consummate showman and embattled victim of environmental neglect—by staging a kinship from an ethical distance. This project integrates Lucas’s own motion data, her adopted wild flamingos’ migration data, and live motion capture, respectively, to animate a flock of virtual flamingos, spatialize sound, and bring multiple participants into a world where they can dance together with virtual flamingos as flamingo avatars.

The interactive installation consists of a monitor that shows a swarm of a few thousand flies. When a person positions himself in front of the screen, the insects builds up the contour of the person. They begin to arrange and rearrange themselves continuously, thereby creating a recognizable likeness of the individual. Posing in front of the monitor attracts the flies. Within seconds they invade the face, but even the slightest movement of the head or parts of the face drives them off. The portraits are thus in constant flux; they construct and deconstruct. Portrait on the Fly is a commentary on our love for making pictures of ourselves (Selfie-Culture), it has to do with change, transience, and impermanence.

מיצב אינטראקטיבי. מסך מציג צבר של אלפי זבובים. כאשר מתקרבים אליו הזבובים מתארגנים באופן שמחקה את קו המתאר של הפנים ויוצרים פורטרט זבובי. התנועה התזזיתית של הזבובים יוצרת דימיון נזיל והבהובי לדמותו של המתבונן. הזבובים מגיבים במהירות לכל תזוזה קטנה של הפנים, ועל כל שינוי מימיקה, הם מתרחקים מהקו שיצרו, וחוזרים ומתארגנים בהתאם לו מחדש, כך שהפורטרטים שהם יוצרים, נזילים - נבנים ומתפרקים. העבודה מתייחסת לאהבה שלנו לסלפיז, שבבסיסם מציגים שינוי, זמניות וחוסר קביעות. בקיצור, סלפי-זבוב.

Mammoth-O-Matic

Avi Milgrom and Zohar Gottesman

During archeological excavation conducted in the city of Holon (1964-65) the remains of a prehistoric elephant were found: a mastodon that inhabited the area roughly 120,000 years ago. The mastodon's skeleton showed signs of having been butchered by human hands. This was a clear indication that a hunter-gatherer group, typically small in number, had lived in this region that was also abundant with fresh water. The fresh water reservoirs had drawn wild horses, hippopotamuses, deer and elephants to the region, and humans hunted all of these.

This work reconstructs the mastodon as wild game proudly exhibited - but also reveals it as an oracle of grim and bleak tidings. The jump from a prehistoric past to the digital future evokes fantastical images of human and nonhuman life through far-reaching moments in time.

אבי מילגרום וזוהר גוטסמן

במהלך חפירות ארכיאולוגיות בעיר חולון בשנים 1964-1965 נמצאו שרידיו של פיל קדמון מסוג מסטודון שחי באזור לפני כ-120,000 שנים. שרידיו של המסטודון, עליהם נמצאו סימני ביתור ושימוש אנושיים, מצביעים על חברת ציידים לקטים אשר חיה בקבוצות קטנות באזור, שהיה באותה עת סביבת מקווי מים מתוקים שסיפקה להם את הציד שלהם - סוסי בר, היפופוטמים, איילים ופילים.

בעבודה זו מתבצע שחזור אחד לאחד של אותו פיל קדמון כחיה ניצודה המוצגת לראווה. עם זאת, המסטודון הניצוד מתגלה לצופה כאורקל המספק נבואות קודרות ומשפטי עוגיות מזל. הקפיצה בין העבר הקדמון להווה הדיגיטלי באותו מיקום מרחבי מעוררת פנטזיות הנוגעות ביחסים בין האנושיים והלא אנושיים דרך רווחי זמן מרוחקים.

Liat Segal

A machine prints images and texts on a unique surface sensitive to ultraviolet light. The embedded images dissolve and disappear with the passage of time, without evidence.

The images and texts are taken from pet memorial sites, where the animals’ human friends commemorate their memory after their death.

The operation of the slow machine makes it difficult for the observer to remember the image in detail and to contain the whole picture. The image, like memory, is no longer eternal, but ephemeral. The personal texts are often written in the first person and testify to the animal, as well as the character, loneliness, and desire of the human to be heard.

במיצב "זכרונות מחמד" ניצבת מכונה המדפיסה דימויים וטקסטים על גבי משטח מיוחד הרגיש לאור אולטרא סגול. הדימויים המוטבעים מתפוגגים ונעלמים עם חלוף הזמן, ללא עדות.

הדימויים והטקסטים לקוחים מאתרי זיכרון לחיות מחמד, בהם החברים האנושיים של החיה מנציחים את זיכרה לאחר מותה.

פעולת המכונה האיטית מקשה על המתבונן לזכור את הדימוי לפרטיו ולהכיל את התמונה השלמה. הדימוי, כמו הזיכרון, אינו נצחי עוד, אלא בן חלוף. הטקסטים האישיים נכתבים, לרוב, בגוף ראשון ומעידים על החיה, כמו גם על אופיו, בדידותו והרצון בקשב של בני האדם.

SurveillAnts is an interactive, biological installation that explores the unseen world of ants. The project aims to provoke people’s curiosity about non-human life and touches on themes of emergent intelligence and creation Through SurveillAnts; people can explore the movement of live ants over time, and try to find a rationale for the emergent patterns. The use of surveillance technology transforms the ant paths to colorful drawings and the ants themselves to painters.

SurveillAnts הוא מתקן ביולוגי אינטראקטיבי, אשר בוחן את העולם הבלתי נראה של הנמלים. מטרת הפרוייקט היא לעורר את סקרנותם של אנשים על החיים הלא-אנושיים ולעורר שאלות בדבר האפשרות של אינטליגנציה ויצירה לא אנושית. באמצעות SurveillAnts, אנשים יכולים להתבונן ולחקור תנועת נמלים חיות לאורך זמן, ולנסות למצוא הגיון בדפוסים הנחשפים. השימוש בטכנולוגיית מעקב, הופכות את מסלולי הנמלים לציורים צבעוניים ואת הנמלים עצמן לציירות.

Moreno Perna

A sensorial experience that combines sound from loudspeakers and human bodies. The speakers are fed improvised voices from the computer, but play independently from each other, as if free-willed. The human bodies are objectified and only reproduce the sounds of the leading performer.

This work attempts to subvert the two identities. It entrusts humanity to the loudspeakers while merely using the human bodies as instruments, resulting in a meditative soundscape that blurs the human/nonhuman divide.

חוויה חושית המשלבת קול מרמקולים וגוף אנושי. הרמקולים מוזנים בקולות מאולתרים מהמחשב, אבל הם מבצעים אותם בנפרד זה מזה, כבעלי רצון חופשי. הגופים האנושיים בעבודה, לעומת זאת, הופכים לאובייקטים אשר בכוחם רק לשחזר את הקולות של המבצע הראשי. עבודה זו מנסה לנטרל את הזהויות המובהקות של השניים: היא מעניקה אנושיות לגוף הממוחשב, ומשתמשת בגוף האנושי כבמכשיר פשוט. התוצאה היא סאונד מדיטטיבי, המטשטש את הפערים בין האנושי / לא אנושי.

The Fox and the Raven

Real time video. A raven and a fox share the same piece of land together. The fox guards the territory, and the raven escapes but has to return again and again because of its inability to stay in the air for an indefinite period. The constant pursuit of the fox and the crow is a product of artificial intelligence, a computer simulation that conceals them in an imagined world and is programmed to tire them and their ability to chase and escape. The length of the work is endless and is played non-stop throughout the event. The pursuit of the two forces is dynamic and changes throughout the running time. The use of a learning intelligence system makes the developments unpredictable, just as in real life.

עבודת וידאו המתקיימת בזמן אמת. עורב ושועל חולקים יחד את אותה פיסת קרקע. השועל שומר על הטריטוריה, והעורב מצידו בורח, אך נאלץ לחזור שוב ושוב בשל אי יכולתו לשהות באוויר לזמן בלתי מוגבל. המרדף התמידי של השועל והעורב הוא תוצר של בינה מלאכותית, סימולציית מחשב הכולאת אותם בעולם מדומיין ומתוכנתת לעייף אותם ואת יכולתם לרדוף ולברוח. אורך העבודה הינו אינסופי והיא מנוגנת לכל אורך האירוע ״נונ-סטופ״. המרדף בין שני הכוחות דינמי ומשתנה לאורך זמן הריצה והשימוש במערכת בינה מלאכותית-לומדת הופך את אופן ההתפתחות להיות בלתי צפוי, בדיוק כמו בחיים האמיתיים.

The work’ “ready: live” connects two distinct processes: the humanization of virtual forms in which the computerized receives human characteristics, and the process of human motion capture technologies, which results in a virtual movement that is disguised as "organic." In the video, we follow an interview with a psychologist working at a company aiming to investigate how virtual bots can be made human-like, which interlaces with an intimate movement of animated characters. The connection between the parts of the work mixes the human and the nonhuman and examines the relationships between stimuli and responses, both human and computerized, as well as the resultant power and control relations.

העבודה מוכן:חיה / ready:live מחברת בין שתי תופעות: הראשונה היא תהליך ההאנשה של צורות וירטואליות בה הממוחשב מקבל תכונות אדם, השנייה היא טכנולוגיות ללכידת-תנועה אנושית, ההופכות את התנועה לווירטואלית במסווה של "אורגניות". העבודה מציגה ראיון עם פסיכולוג העובד בחברה שמטרתה לחקור כיצד ניתן להפוך את הבוטים וירטואליים לאנושיים יותר, ומשולבת בסצנה תנועה אינטימית של דמויות אנימציה. החיבור בין חלקי העבודה מערבב בין האנושי והלא-אנושי, ובוחן את מערכות היחסים בין גירויים ותגובות, אנושיות וממוחשבות, ואת יחסי- כוח והשליטה הנלווים לכך.
